Dental implants are lifelike replacement teeth that feel as real as your originals. A single dental implant consists of three parts:a diagram of a dental implant labeled with the jawbone, tooth root, gum, and crown, showing how it resembles a natural tooth

  • A titanium root
  • A crown, which looks like a tooth
  • An abutment, which connects the two

If you’re interested in a dental implant, we’ll take x-rays and a 3-D digital scan of your mouth. That helps us plan exactly where to place the implant and design a natural-looking crown that complements your other teeth perfectly.

You’ll also have an appointment with our oral surgeon, Dr. Abunasra, who will place a titanium root in your jaw. Then your mouth will need to heal. Over the next 3 or so months, the titanium root will fuse with your jawbone, a process called osseointegration. After that fusion, we’ll attach a crown that’s designed for your mouth and made of strong, beautiful ceramic.

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

You may need a dental implant to replace a missing tooth or anchor a bridge that will replace several teeth in a row. Dental implants protect your long-term dental health. When you lose teeth, your body begins to resorb the jawbone that supported them. This is a one-way process. Once the jawbone is very weak, the only way to strengthen it is with a bone graft. It’s much better to proactively prevent jawbone resorption with dental implants.

An implant root sends the same signals to your body that your natural tooth did, so your jawbone won’t atrophy. Not only does that preserve your bite strength, but it keeps your face looking youthful. We can also support a set of dentures with implants, restoring your whole smile at once. You can read more about our implant overdentures here.

Structurally, implants are nearly identical to natural teeth and will feel the same as your originals when you bite, chew, and speak.

The biggest drawback of dental implants is their cost. If budget is an issue, we offer less costly options for replacing missing teeth. But the reason many patients still choose implants is that there’s no other treatment that feels like having your real teeth back.

What to Know About Dental Implants

When implants are placed properly, they can last a lifetime. But it’s important to see a dentist trained and experienced in implantology, because they can fail if they’re placed improperly. Dr. Ijaz has completed a mini residency in the subject at New York University. Our prosthodontist, Dr. Dengelegi, has advanced training in full-mouth restorations using implants. And we have an in-house oral surgeon, Dr. Abunasra. You can rest assured that you are receiving the very best of care for a natural, secure, and comfortable result.

Many patients prefer sedation for implant surgery. We offer nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation.

After you have implants, you’ll need to take care of them. That means coming in for regular dental cleanings and checkups and practicing good oral hygiene, like flossing and brushing every day.
