Pros and Cons of Invisalign

North Haven Invisalign aligners have significant advantages, such as:
- Speed. Traditional braces can take 2 to 3 years. Invisalign is more efficient because it’s computer-designed for precise tooth movements. Most patients can get the smile they want in about a year.
- Convenience. It’s much easier to keep your teeth clean with invisible braces. With traditional braces, you must be extremely careful about flossing properly around and through the metal fixtures.
- Aesthetics. Clear braces really are invisible at a conversational distance. No one will know you’re straightening your teeth.
- Comfort. Since the aligners have no metal, there’s nothing to scratch the inside of your mouth. The soft plastic is comfortable to wear day and night.
A disadvantage of Invisalign clear braces is their cost, which is higher than that of traditional braces. Also, Invisalign isn’t right for all misaligned teeth. Sometimes, only traditional braces will work, such as when teeth haven’t fully erupted. In some cases, you may prefer dental veneers over braces.
Getting Invisalign Clear Braces
The process is simple if you want to straighten your teeth with Invisalign. First, we’ll take impressions and x-rays of your mouth. We’ll send this information to the laboratory. There, a computer will design a series of clear aligners to move your teeth a little at a time until they’re straight. It will consider how your teeth fit together when your mouth is closed and how to achieve the desired orientation for each tooth.
After the lab delivers your aligners to our office, you’ll come in for another appointment. Then you’ll visit about once a month until your teeth are straight so we can check your progress.
When you put in your new set of aligners, they’ll be snug around your teeth and may feel like they don’t quite fit. That’s normal. They’re shaped to apply gentle force to crooked teeth until they’re in the new position. Your body will create new bone in your jaw to accommodate the change over the next two weeks.
When two weeks are over, you’ll put in a new aligner and repeat the process. As you progress through the plastic aligners, your teeth will get noticeably straighter.
Caring for Invisalign Plastic Braces
You’ll need to wear clear aligners from 20 to 22 hours daily. You won’t get the intended effect if you don’t, and your teeth may shift back to their previous position. Take your aligners out when you’re eating, and brush your teeth before putting them back in. You don’t want to trap food particles next to your teeth.
