Wallingford Sedation Dentist

Wallingford Sedation Dentist

If you’re anxious about seeing the dentist, maybe because your previous dentist didn’t adequately treat your pain, sedation can help. While sedated, you’ll barely notice your dental work and probably won’t remember it later, depending on your choice of sedative.

Sedation is helpful for patients with:

  • A strong gag reflex
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Certain medical conditions
  • Fear of needles

Some dental work is just easier to complete with sedation, such as:

  • Wisdom teeth removal
  • Multiple extractions
  • Long appointments for major restorative work
  • Placing implants

Sedation Dentistry and Anxiety

Sedation can work wonders for patients who are anxious at the dentist or who can’t get numb from novocain alone. Often these patients put off routine dental care. What happens then is that small cavities grow into big ones, and you end up needing a crown and maybe a root canal, when it could have been fixed with a small filling.

With sedation dentistry, you’ll learn to expect a pleasant experience at every appointment. For many patients, that leads to more frequent checkups and cleanings and better oral health.

Another reason people fear the dentist is they fear being judged. We understand and are here to help and will never criticize you for your dental problems. Many circumstances can lead to poor oral health, such as anxiety, trauma, poor physical health, and depression. Fortunately, no matter your situation, we can help you achieve a healthy smile again.

Types of Sedation

We offer three kinds of sedation at Nova Dental. The kind you choose will depend on your unique needs.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

With nitrous oxide, you’ll be awake but feel very relaxed. To begin, we’ll place a mask emitting nitrous oxide and oxygen over your nose. After breathing it in for just a few minutes, you’ll feel deeply relaxed. After your work is complete, we’ll stop the flow of nitrous oxide. Breathing the oxygen-rich air will clear the sedative from your body, and you’ll be alert enough to return to work immediately. Nitrous oxide is a good choice for patients who need to be able to drive to and from their appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is simple. We’ll prescribe a pill for you to take before your visit. It will make you indifferent to the dental work, and you may feel a sense of bliss and deep relaxation. You will still be conscious and able to respond to requests to open your mouth, or other requests. But it may seem to you like you’re asleep, so it is sometimes called sleep dentistry. You probably won’t remember any of your appointment.

The sedative will take a few hours to wear off, so you’ll need a ride to and from your appointment.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is the strongest level of sedation we offer, and is appropriate for patients with a high level of anxiety. As with oral sedation, you’ll be conscious but not likely to remember your dental work. Nonetheless, we’ll be able to talk to you, and you’ll follow simple directions. You’ll need someone to take you home after your appointment, as you’ll be groggy for some time after.
